Ronald Edward Shackelford

Ronald (Ron) Edward Shackelford, 74, died March 5, 2014 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice home. He was born June 19, 1939 in Forsyth County to Grady Thomas and Mary Graves Shackelford. Ron will be missed dearly and is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Alice Walser Shackelford; one son, Doug (Julia) Shackelford of Graham, NC; one granddaughter, Ksenia (Bryan) Porterfield of San Diego, CA; one brother, Jerry (Carolyn) Shackelford of Jacksonville, FL; one brother-in-law Fred (Linda) Walser of Winston-Salem, NC; a number of nieces and nephews; a host of special friends and The Seeker's Sunday School Class of Trinity Moravian Church, where he was the teacher before his health declined. His godson and nephew Jim (Sara) Walser has been a dedicated caregiver throughout Ron's illness. As a young man Ron won a scholarship to Duke University and graduated with a B.S. in chemistry (1961). He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco where he had been an organic chemist, computer programmer and a manager. His biggest loves were his family, friends, and helping others, who he served in a multitude of roles both large and small: husband, father, brother, uncle, friend, and mentor; trustee, elder and Sunday School teacher. Ron had a deep love for the Lord and studying His Word. He was a gifted Bible teacher for over 45 years and enjoyed sharing God's Word with others. Ron loved fishing at Buxton, NC and could often be found fishing while reading a book on the tailgate of his truck. He was a caring person, always lending a helping hand. A celebration of Ron's life will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, March 10, 2014 at Trinity Moravian Church with The Rev. John Jackman and The Rev. Dr. Bill McElveen officiating. Inurnment will follow in God's Acre. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Ron's memory to the Trinity Moravian Church Organ Fund, 220 E. Sprague St., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27127.
