Mr. Roscoe Elwood Sides, 99, a proud WWII Veteran passed away peacefully on Wed., October 31, 2018 with family at his side.  He was born March 23, 1919, the first-born child of Paul David and Perry Myers Sides.  Roscoe married his sweetheart Catherine Dorsett in 1939 and together they lovingly raised three daughters, Dorothy Sides Reynolds, Barbara Sides Barron (who survive) and Rebecca Sides Julian, who predeceased him in May 2017.  Roscoe served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Heavy Artillery in Rhineland, Central Europe where he saw intense action.  He was a PFC Chief Cannonist /Gunner, Battery A, with the 373rd Field Artillery Battalion under Patton’s 3rd Army.  Roscoe received the WWII Victory Medal, EAME Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, a Good Conduct Medal and a Lapel Button for Riflery.  Upon returning home, he worked for Container Corp. of America for 30 years as well as farmed, which was his great love, - raising tobacco, vegetables, peaches and pumpkins. He was well known for his sweet watermelons and cantaloupes.  He greatly enjoyed fishing at the coast and spending time with family at his vacation home at Yaupon Beach. Roscoe was preceded in death by 3 brothers & 3 sisters. He is survived by two brothers, Homer and Bruner Sides; six grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter, and nephews/nieces, who will miss him, his interesting war stories and sense of humor.  A special thanks to granddaughter Susan Barkocy & her family who lovingly cared for him in his declining years.  The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Kinderton Chapel from 1 until 2 PM on Monday, Nov. 5, 2018.  Following the visitation, a funeral service will be held at 3:00 P.M. at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum, with military honors.
