Rose Mary Williams Slate

WINSTON-SALEM-Ms. Rose Mary Williams Slate, 61, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Ms. Slate, or ""Rosie"" as she was affectionately known, was born on July 17, 1952, in Guilford County to Theron Lee Williams and Mildred Catherine Ward Williams, both deceased. After graduating from Grimsley High School, Rosie moved to Winston-Salem and joined the R&B group, Black and Blue, launching what became an accomplished career as a professional singer. She enchanted audiences across the world, also performing with Special Occasion. Rosie had a career in sales with Slate Marketing Inc. after settling down to be with her family. If music was her first love, family and friends were her greatest love. Rosie lived to love her family and friends, to cook for them and joke and laugh with them. Rosie's compassion and sense of humor touched everyone she met. She is survived by her loving siblings, Jerry Donald Williams (Loretta) and Frances Williams Grisim (Wendell, AKA Fred). Rosie is and will always be adored by her daughters: Ashli Slate Nicks, Brooke Slate Bliss and Morgan Catherine Slate; her grandchildren: Addison Grey Nicks, Hunter Byron Nicks and Ansley Rose Bliss; her sons-in-law: Gregory Byron Nicks and Troy Patrick Bliss; and her future son-in-law: Danison Gray Robinson. She is also survived by Bobby Grey Slate, the father of her children, and Catherine Dale Anderson, with whom she shared a special bond through loving and raising her children and grandchildren. Rosie is much loved by her nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends, who have long referred to her as, ""our best friend."" A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 14, 2014, at Centenary United Methodist Church with Dr. Mark Ralls and Rev. Judy Knopf officiating. A reception for family and friends will be held at the residence of Bobby Slate in Lewisville, North Carolina, following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to Brenner Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 571021, Winston-Salem, NC 27157.
