Roy Benton Braswell

Roy Benton Braswell, 91, passed away Saturday morning, June 11, 2016, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. Roy was born October 23, 1924, in Winston-Salem, NC, to Lonnie Franklin Braswell and Flora Octa Fritts Braswell. He was a 1949 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a lifelong member of the UNC Alumni Association. He was an avid and devoted fan of UNC football and basketball. Roy was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Skirmish in the Pacific. He was a member of Clemmons United Methodist Church since 1973, serving as chairman and in other roles multiple times on the church's building, finance and long-range planning committees. His work in the cabinet industry spanned more than 35 years and took him across the East Coast, as well as numerous U.S. cities for industry and related events. His work also provided him the opportunity to travel internationally with his wife to Italy, Greece, Israel and France. Roy loved to travel, was an avid reader, valued spending time with family and friends at every opportunity and was an amazing role model to his family. He loved to tell a good story, laugh and listen attentively to others. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James Franklin Braswell; and his sister, Ruth Guirkin Truman. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Sara Ellen Bason Braswell, of the home; his daughter, Patricia Lynn Braswell, of the home; his daughter Julie Ann Braswell Connell and her husband Michael Connell, of Denver, NC; and Jordyn McKenzie Connell, of Denver, NC, who was her Paw Paw's beloved granddaughter of which he was very proud. He is also survived by cherished nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, from 11:00-12:00 Noon at Hayworth Miller Funeral Home, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem, NC. A graveside service will follow at 12:30 PM at Forsyth Memorial Park, 3771 Yadkinville Road, Winston-Salem, NC. In addition to flowers, donations may be made to Clemmons United Methodist Church, 3700 Clemmons Road, Clemmons, NC.
