Roy Everette Cook, 89, of Kernersville passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center. Born in Madison County to the late Edison Delmos & Mollie Mae Gosnell Cook, he spent his life serving – as an aircraft mechanic in the U.S. Air Force, a retired truck driver, and a faithful member of Kerwin Baptist Church for over 50 years. In his younger days, he was always willing to help a friend – driving them to and from church or climbing under a car to fix it. Anyone who spent time with Roy knew one of his favorite things was to make people laugh. Even during his last few days, he kept the nurses chuckling – telling them not to electrocute him with the EKG pads and to please not mess his hair up. His quote, “If you don’t have laughter, you don’t have anything.” Roy was a hard-working, dedicated husband and father survived by his wife of 61 years, Linda Jean Edmonds Cook, and two sons, Brian (Jennifer) of Navarre, FL and Eric (Angie) of Kernersville, and seven grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Todd, and siblings, Hardy Cook, Theda Oakman, Edwin Cook, Bebe Huggins, Virginia Sheppard, and Vivian Wallin.
The family is incredibly grateful to the nursing staff at Kernersville Medical Center for the genuine kindness, compassion, and love shown to Roy and his family during his final days on earth. “He has gone home to Heaven, where pain is no more.”
A funeral service will be held at 11am on Monday, May 25, 2026, at Kerwin Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Daniel Hawtree. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Kerwin Baptist Church Missions Fund to continue spreading the love of Jesus. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
