Mr. Roy Spicer Nifong, 96, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away Thursday, April 11, 2024 at Salemtowne. He was born on December 19, 1927 in Forsyth County to Lewis Geleva Nifong and Eva Smith Nifong. He grew up in Midway and graduated from Midway High School. He was an army veteran and retired from the Veteran’s Administration after 36 years of service. In 1948, Roy married the love of his life Grace Hege. He cherished her for more than 70 years.
He was a faithful member of Ardmore United Methodist Church for 73 years. Roy loved his church and participated in many ways in its ministry. He made many lifelong friends there whom he treasured.
Roy’s gardening skills were legendary. Anyone who knew him knew they were likely to find him outside in nature. He Loved Nascar and was an avid Wake Forest fan who proudly wore his black and gold to basketball games over the years. He and Grace provided support to Meredith College as well.
Surviving are two beloved daughters, Marianne N. Raker (Gwyn) and Susan N. Williamson (Rick); four grandchildren, Caroline Raker Caravella (Jason), Bryan Raker (Leeanne), Jennifer Williamson Ignasiak (Darrick), and Andrea Williamson Gee (Scott), and 4 great grandchildren Eric, EmmaLee Elias Ignasiak and Matthew Gee. He also had one nephew, Richard Speer (Wanda.) He was looking forward to the birth of two great-granddaughters this summer.
Roy was a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who treasured the times he spent with his family. He was the epitome of kindness, generosity, selflessness and quiet love. His grandchildren affectionately called him Poppi and his great grandchildren were always filled with excitement to go see their Pop.
We would like to thank the wonderful staff at Salemtowne for the excellent care they gave Roy the last 5 years. He was truly loved and treated like a family member.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Kelly Carpenter officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. A private entombment will take place at Parklawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church.
