R. Wayne Smith passed away April 20, 2024, at Atrium Health Baptist Medical Center. He was born October 25, 1929, to Elwood W. Smith and Eva Mae Hunt Smith in Stokes County. He graduated from Pinnacle High School as valedictorian and Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University). While at Appalachian, he met the love of his life, Dorothy Elizabeth Black, from Thomasville, NC. They were married on December 27, 1950. He taught school in Yadkin County before joining the staff of Farmers Bank in Pilot Mountain. Through the years of employment, he became President, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Farmers Bank and retired as Senior Vice-President and City Executive of the Pilot Mountain office of First Citizens Bank. Mr. Smith was always interested and participated in religious, civic and service organizations while becoming more involved after his retirement. He was a member and officer of the First Presbyterian Church of Pilot Mountain, served several years as chairman of the Zoning Board of Adjustments for the Town of Pilot Mountain, served for twenty-two years on the Board of Trustees of Northern Hospital of Surry County (now Northern Regional Hospital) and was a charter member of the Pilot Mountain Civic Club. He is survived by a daughter, Beverly Elaine Smith of Shoals; one son and daughter-in-law, Donald Wayne and Vallery Burch Smith of Raleigh; a grandson and grand-daughter-in law, Matthew Smith and Carli Ann Pegram of Austin, Texas, one great-grandson, Boone Wesley Pegram of Austin, Texas; one sister, Audrey Smith Kirby of Winston-Salem; two brothers, James Elwood (Jimmy) Smith of Greensboro and Carl Moir Smith of Pfafftown; four nieces and one nephew. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of sixty-four plus years, Dorothy Elizabeth Black Smith; his parents, Elwood and Eva Smith; and a sister, Callie Smith Watson. Also, left to cherish his memory are the membership of the First Presbyterian Church in Pilot Mountain, generations of the family of George Walter Hunt, the membership of the Pilot Mountain Civic Club and Fonda’s Lunch Bunch of Mountain Valley Hospice. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 316 E. Main Street, Pilot Mountain, NC at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2024, with the Reverend Travis Milam and the Reverend R. Sidney Lanier officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 1209, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041-1209.
