RuJan “Jan” Hummel, 71, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2026, while surrounded by her family.
Jan was born on May 11, 1954, in Waco, Texas, to Rufus and Barbara Nutt. She grew up in Valley Mills, TX, and later attended Durham Business School in Waco. She spent the first part of her professional career working in human resources with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms in Dallas. Throughout her life, she also served in many volunteer roles with various organizations while living in Tulsa, OK, Connecticut, and Winston-Salem, NC. Jan was primarily a devoted homemaker. She poured her heart into caring for her family and creating a loving, steady home. Work she considered her greatest calling.
Jan was a woman of deep faith and quiet strength. She was an active member of South Fork Church of Christ and found joy in reading, antiquing, and spending time with family and friends. She especially loved the North Carolina mountains, their beauty, stillness, and sense of peace, and treasured time spent there whenever she could.
She was preceded in death by her father, Rufus Nutt; her stepfather, Billy O’Banion; her brothers, Kenneth Nutt and Rhae‑Paul Nutt; and her beloved grandson, Henry Hummel.
Jan is survived by her husband, Chuck, of 50 years; sons, Andrew Hummel (Amanda) of Raleigh and Mark Hummel (Annie) of Mooresville; grandchildren, Alexander, Robert, Davis, Mary-Rane, Jack, and Hannah. To her grandchildren, Jan was lovingly known as “Nina.” She is also survived by her mother, Barbara O’Banion of Abilene, TX; her sister, Jackie Vardiman (Phil) of Abilene, TX; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members whom she loved dearly.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on April 13, 2026, at South Fork Church of Christ in Winston-Salem, NC, with Minister Matt Huddleston officiating. A reception at the church will immediately follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Crisis Control Ministry, 200 East Tenth Street, Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27101 (crisiscontrol.org); Eastern European Missions, P.O. Box 55245, Hurst, TX 76054 (eem.org); or the South Fork Church of Christ Missions Fund, 205 Keating Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 (southforkcofc.org).
