He enjoyed working with the children and youth at Calvary Baptist Church and Ardmore Baptist Church and cherished being a part of the community at Robinhood Road Baptist Church. Russ was generous with his time, always willing to help someone in need and this included volunteering with NC Baptist Men’s Association in their disaster recovery efforts. He also recognized others’ acts of kindness and handing out $2 bills and pens to those responsible. Russ had many hobbies including racing motorcycles, go karts, and cars. He enjoyed the thrill of going fast! Most importantly, Russ was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. In addition to his parents, Russ was preceded in death by his sister, Joan Brown and one brother, Mark Sumner. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Patterson Sumner; daughter, Wendy Srinivasan (Anand); sons, Russell “Buddy” Sumner (Emily) and Christopher Sumner (Karla); grandsons, Kenton Sumner, Henry Regan, and Oliver Sumner; sister, Jeanette Powers; and brother, Craig Sumner.
