Ruth Duggins Smith, 100, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2025, leaving behind a century marked by creativity, devotion, and love.
Born on January 31, 1925, Ruth was a woman of many talents and passions. She was deeply artistic, creating beautiful custom greeting cards that brought joy to all who received them. With her skilled hands and imaginative spirit, she also carved Father Christmas figures, each one crafted with care and cherished as a reflection of her artistry.
In her younger days, Ruth found joy on the dance floor, delighting in the elegance of the tango. At home, she was a dedicated homemaker whose warmth and hospitality created a space filled with love and comfort. She adored both dogs and cats, treating them as part of her family and sharing her gentle spirit with every creature she cared for. She was deeply devoted to her church, Friedland, and her Moravian faith.
Ruth shared more than 60 years of marriage with her beloved husband, a partnership built on loyalty, laughter, and enduring love. Together they created a legacy of family and faith that will be treasured by all who knew them.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jay Van, her son, Craig Smith, and her brother, Everett Duggins. . Still living are her daughters Michelle Bernard (Thomas) and Sherry Troop (Lee), and her daughter-in-law LuAnn Smith.
A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Monday, September 1, 2025, at Friedland Moravian Church, with The Reverend John G. Rights officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
Hayworth Miller Silas Creek is assisting the family.
