Sam Rowan Jones

Mr. Sam Rowan Jones, 94, of Winston-Salem, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 26, at his home in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born April 10, 1929, on his family farm in Winston-Salem. He was the second youngest of 10 children born to Bertha Miller Jones and Rowan A. Jones of Forsyth County. He attended and was a member of Hopewell Moravian Church. Sam graduated from Griffith High School in Winston-Salem with perfect attendance, a fact that he would proudly proclaim at any opportunity. Sam was a farmer all his life, taking over the family farm where he was born from the age of 23. While still a full-time farmer and logger, he accepted a job with the Postal Service as a substitute rural mail carrier. For many years, he delivered the mail in the morning and then would return to the farm and continue his work until supper time. He enjoyed meeting and talking with the people he met along his mail route and had many funny stories to tell about his encounters with them. Sam is survived by 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren who he loved dearly. His grandchildren spent many hours during the summers working on the farm with their grandparents. Sam taught them the meaning of hard work and a strong work ethic; lessons that have stuck with them in their current lives; a legacy that has helped them grow into strong, successful adults. At a very young age, the oldest gave him the nickname “Daddy Udden Nudden” because from the time he could talk, his Grandpa was always on a tractor. And the name has been continued by some of his great grandchildren. He farmed with his best friend, Red “Baby” Fishel until Red passed away. Every night at 9 pm, the phone on the wall would ring, and they would discuss farming and their plans for the next day, most evenings talking for over an hour. He and his wife, Lola Lawing Jones, celebrated their 67th anniversary before she proceeded him in death on April 6, 2020. He was also proceeded in death by a daughter, Lori Geneva Hamrick, six sisters, Helen Comer, Mildred Boyter, twin sisters, Elma Hege and Elsie Cude, Ina Rose Seagraves, and Doris Guy, and 2 brothers, Lester Jones and George Jones. He is survived by two daughters, Cindy Spear (Steve) of Lexington and Annette (Lewis) of Boonville. Five grandchildren, Samuel Spear (Melinda), Abraham Spear, Sarah Hamrick (Josh Kellogg), Justin Welborn (Jessica) and Alex Hamrick (fiancé Claire); four great grandchildren, Conner, William, Isabelle Lola and Eleanor, and by one brother, Max A. Jones (Carol) of Harmony. Also surviving is his beloved “therapy” dog, his Chihuahua, Bo, who he loved so much and was by his side until he passed. His cats, Tramp, the blind cat, and Yeller, the stray cat that adopted him. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, July 31, 2023, at Hopewell Moravian Church Graveyard with Rev. Jeff Carter officiating. Visitation for extended family and friends will be from 4:00-6:00 PM, Sunday, July 30, 2023, at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Chapel.
