Sankie Callahan Fritchman

WINSTON-SALEM-Mrs. Sankie C. Fritchman, 86, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2014 at her residence. She was born on February 28, 1928 in Bladen County, NC to Neil Graham Callahan and Mattie Powers Callahan. Mrs. Fritchman was one of 15 children. She married Richard Carl ""Dutch"" Fritchman on March 9, 1946. They were married for 67 years until his death in 2013. Mrs. Fritchman began her career at Integon Insurance Company and went on to work at Thalhimers Department Store until she retired. She was a volunteer for Baptist Hospital for 30 years. She volunteered in patient aide and the gift shop where she was known as the ""cookie lady."" You could always find her working one of the many sales the gift shop would have at the hospital. She was a long-time member of First United Church of Christ, the Retired Service Volunteer Program and AARP. She loved to dance and travel as she did so many years with her late husband, Dutch. Sankie will be remembered for her famous pecan tarts and potato chip cookies that she so kindly baked and shared with so many. She was a wonderful and thoughtful mother, wife and friend. She loved to make every birthday, holiday and any occasion special. Mrs. Fritchman was preceded in death along with her parents and husband by several brothers and sisters. Mrs. Fritchman is survived by two daughters, Barbara Thompson (Robert) and Frances Ann Johnson (Al), all of Winston-Salem; brother, Thurston Callahan of Fayetteville, NC; and two sisters, Mildred Payne of Hampton, VA and Dorothy Callahan of Wilmington, NC. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Christa Warise officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and also following the service at Sankie's residence. The family would like to thank Options of Senior America for all the support and help in tending to Sankie. They would also like to express their gratitude to Sankie's caregivers, Debbie, Tonya and Pam for all their love and care towards Sankie. The family is also grateful to Creekside Terrace in Winston-Salem where Sankie lived. They provided a home away from home for her. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to YMCA Camp Hanes, 1225 Camp Hanes Rd., King, NC 27021. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
