Shirley Mae Johnston Cardwell

Ms. Shirley Mae Johnston Cardwell, 86, of Mocksville, NC, passed away on October 9, 2026, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born on August 4, 1940, in Mercer County, West Virginia to the late Mr. Andrew Johnston and Mrs. Nellie Mae Gilmore Johnston.

Ms. Cardwell worked as a machine operator for Tension Envelope until the business closed in 2005. She was known for her strong work ethic and selfless heart. She worked tirelessly to provide for her family and always put others first, even when it meant going without herself. That was simply who she was. While working there, she met her lifelong partner, Palmer, and they remained inseparable. After retirement, she enjoyed bowling and working on puzzles.

Shirley was a devoted mother and a friend to all who knew her. Her legacy of love and selflessness will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in passing by her daughter, Sonia Cardwell Ferraiolo and her son, Randy Cardwell.

She will be lovingly remembered by her partner, Palmer Proveaux; son, Larry Cardwell (Myra); daughter, Susan Robles (Thomas); nine grandchildren, Matthew, Lisa, Raymond, Amber, James, Brianna, Randall, Brandon and Nicolas; seven great grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Danny Sink and Pastor Dean Tsiolkas officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
