Mrs. Shirley Jane Edman Decker, 95, died on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Shirley was born on May 23, 1922, in Des Moines, IA, to Emil Reuben Edman and Maizie Hughes Solomon. Emil later married Hettie Hancock who raised Shirley as her own and was dearly loved. In 1927, Shirley started public school in Winston-Salem, NC, and in 1935 became a member of First Christian Church. She graduated from South High School in June of 1939. After graduation, she moved to Radford, VA, where she attended Radford College and married the love of her life in December of 1940. The happily married couple moved back to Winston-Salem, NC, where Shirley attended Wake Forest University in 1958. Shirley and her husband owned and operated Edman Electric Company for 31 years, she was the secretary, treasurer, office manager and bookkeeper until her retirement in 1985. While she enjoyed reading, bowling, and golf, she especially loved traveling. She adored her family and felt they were the most important part of her life, she also cherished her friends and loved them dearly. Shirley was greatly loved and will be truly missed. In addition to her beloved parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 and a half years, Leland Wilbur Decker; three sons, Terry C. Decker, Ronald L. Decker, and Timothy W. Decker; and two sisters, Irene Edman Wall and Nancy Edman Godwin. Surviving are one son, Richard E. Decker (wife Misuk); four grandsons, Jeffrey L. Decker, Michael R. Decker, Timothy L. Decker, and Darren C. Decker; two granddaughters, Karen Denise Bradford and Elizabeth Decker Rice; great-grandsons, Kirk Decker, Tyler Decker, Tommy Decker, Zackery Decker, Grayson Decker and Preston Decker; great-granddaughters, Meghan Decker, Ariel Decker, and Kaitlyn Decker; and one step great-granddaughter, Brittney Cason.; and three daughters-in-law, Wilma Decker, Dianne Decker, and Cathy Pinnix. A funeral service will be held at 11am on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Bob Matthews officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In addition to flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Way, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
