Sonja Marlene Kurosky

On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, peacefully in her beautiful home, our sweet mom, grandmother, friend, sister, and companion, Sonja Marlene Kurosky, 72, of Winston-Salem, NC, went from an angel walking on this earth to an angel walking in heaven.

Sonja leaves behind her loving family, whom all thought the world of her, including her daughter, Melanie Stritch; grandson, Benjamin Baker; two sisters, Terri Becker and Judy Aher; and former spouse, John Stritch. 

Over the past few weeks, her family learned more about her and the footprints she left in the sweet city of Winston-Salem, NC, and in so many people’s hearts. They thought they knew it all until now, but there is so much more to learn. They sat surrounded by family and friends on Friday, June 20, 2025, and someone thanked Sonja for saving their life. She didn’t just touch many people, she saved them from themselves, fed them, and nurtured them back to a healthy life. 

Her faith was deep and so beautiful. God worked through her in unimaginable ways. Sonja is why her daughter, Melanie, loves to craft, cook, clean, organize, dance, celebrate birthdays and so much more. Most importantly, she taught her daughter ‘service above self’. Melanie is proudly walking in her mother’s footsteps with her own career, and only hopes she can help as many people as her mother did. Melanie will forever be honored to carry on Sonja’s legacy. 

Sonja loved her grandson, Benjamin, and her daughter, Melanie, so big, and they will miss her so much. They thought they knew pain, but this is something unimaginable. They know it will ease, but for now, they will cope with the negative feelings of grief in the days to come and be forced to just ride the waves as they come. Sonja wasn't just their mom, grandmother, friend, sister, or companion, she was their hero. Sonja and John were remarkable parents, and grandparents, and friends, and their family will be forever grateful. 

I love you more. ❤️

A celebration of Sonja’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at 2:00PM at Highland Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall.
