Sonjia Marlene Kurosky, 72, of Winston Salem, NC, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, in her home surrounded by her loved ones. Born in New Jersey, she was the second daughter of the late Bennett and Marlene Kurosky. Upon graduating from Princeton High School, she would go on to High Point College, and it was there she realized North Carolina would be her home.
After marriage and the birth of her beloved daughter, she found her calling in social work - a path that would ultimately lead her to serve others as the Executive Director of Samaritan Ministries in Winston Salem, NC. Sonjia spent 27 years there, changing lives by giving others the opportunity to develop their potential. Thanks to her skilled leadership, the Ministry began Project Cornerstone, finding men a way out of homelessness and substance abuse into employment and residential security.
She enjoyed family time immensely, often spending holidays with her daughter and grandson - traveling together, sharing beach adventures, and making lasting memories. She remained closely connected with friends from every season of her life from childhood and college through to the present. A devoted member of her community, she loved her neighborhood and was actively involved with Highland Presbyterian Church.
Sonjia was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother in law, Johan Christian Beker.
She leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her daughter, Melanie Stritch; grandson, Benjamin Baker; her former husband, John Stritch; and sisters, Terri Beker and Judy (Vijay) Aher.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at 2pm at Highland Presbyterian Church. A reception will immediately follow in the activity building.
It was Sonjia’s wish that any memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to Samaritan Ministries, 414 E. NW Blvd. Winston Salem, NC 27105.
