Stacey "Maxine" Pegram

Stacy Maxine “Maxine” Pegram, a mother, grandmother, sister, and woman of faith, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 28, 2026.

Maxine was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, on September 8, 1936, to the late Noah Ernest Bennett and Mattie Vaden Bennett. She was a woman of faith and attended Northwest Baptist Church. Her faith was an important part of her life and provided a foundation throughout her many years.

Maxine was married to John Howard “Johnny” Pegram, who preceded her in death.

Together, Maxine and Johnny built a life, raised their family, and worked their tobacco farm. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy Sue Pegram, who was stillborn; her daughter, Dolores Higgins; and her son-in-law, Larry Gregory.

She is survived by her daughter, Stacy Gregory; her son, Bucky Pegram and his wife, Tina; and her son-in-law, Jim Higgins, husband of her late daughter, Dolores, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Her eight grandchildren include Tracy Jenkins (Marty), Jeremy Pegram (Allison), Zach Higgins (Josipa), Michael Strickland (Beth), Josh Pegram (Kathleen), Savanna Click (Nathan), Justin Higgins, and Travis Pegram.

She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Cody Strickland, Lisa Strickland, Marissa Roberts, Page Jackson, Elliot Pegram, Luke Pegram, Daylin Click, Mikayla Click, Deacon Click, Elizabeth Click, Ben Higgins, and Willow Pegram, as well as four great-great-grandchildren. Her sisters, Mary Tuttle (Bill) and Mabel Shaw (Jack), also survive her, along with extended family and friends.

Maxine enjoyed traveling, especially to the mountains, where she took her extended family camping, sightseeing, and fishing. She and Johnny had a large garden and tobacco farm until they retired. She spent her later years working at her son-in-law Jim's daycare, where she worked as a cook and helped care for the infants and toddlers.

Maxine enjoyed having her grandchildren together, sometimes having several of them stay for days at a time. She took pleasure in family traditions, particularly Easter and Christmas, when she would gather everyone together, watch the children play, and enjoy seeing them open their presents. Her family remembers the Easter egg tree, chocolate bunnies, camping trips, family gatherings, and the many simple traditions that became part of their childhood.

Maxine was also someone who showed up. Even when family lived some distance away, she made the effort to be there for birthdays, baptisms, weddings, parties, and other important occasions. She was a practical woman who contributed to her family and community in her own ways, and her presence became a constant across four generations of her family.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 3, at 1:00 p.m. at Northwest Baptist Church, 3605 Edgefield Rd., Greensboro, NC.
