Stanley Eugene “Gene” Elmore, 83, of Winston-Salem, NC, died Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at Novant Health-Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born at home to the late Walter Henry “Bub” and Ruth Butterworth Elmore in Princeton, WV, on August 28, 1939.
Gene graduated from Northfork-Elkhorn High School in 1957, attended McLain’s Business College in Bluefield, WV. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1961 and the reserves an additional three years.
After serving his time in the U.S. Army, he was first employed at First National Bank of Bluefield, where he met and married the love of his life, Arlena Stowers Elmore with whom he was married for 58 years. He left the bank to start his lifelong career with Piedmont Airlines (US Airways). Gene started with Piedmont Airlines in Bluefield, WV, and transferred with his young family to Winston-Salem, NC. He proudly retired with 37 years of service in 1999. Not one to sit around in retirement, he worked part-time for Bob Neil/Flow Pontiac GMC for 13 years as the courtesy van driver until 2013.
During his life he fulfilled his passion for family, travel, volunteering, and service to the community.
He is survived by his wife, Arlena Stowers Elmore; three children, daughter, Terri Beuttel (Mike), son, Greg Elmore (Pam), and daughter, Tracy Elmore; seven grandchildren, David Beuttel (Claire), Jessica Beuttel, Megan Tickle (Ryan), Rebecca Elmore, Brittney Khan, Brandon Khan, and Bradley Khan; one great-grandchild, Carson Davenport; two brothers, Roger Elmore (Sharon), and Mike Elmore; brother-in-law, Chuck Shelton; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Shelton; and his first great grandchild, Julien Alexander Elmore.
A visitation will be held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel on Friday, March 3, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A graveside service will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park for his family and friends on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 2:00 PM. Military rites will be awarded.
Gene requested that everyone always remember the good times shared with him throughout his life.
