Stella Mae Moore Atwood, 91 of Winston-Salem, was called home to her Lord and Savior on January 19, 2018. Stella, or Candy as she was fondly nicknamed by her husband Bub, was born on May 22, 1926 in Old Salem to Claude and Emma Moore. In addition to her parents, Stella was preceded in death by her loving husband Virgil Conrad "Bub" Atwood; her brothers C.F., Jack, and Johnnie; her sister Edith, and her grandson Shawn. Surviving Stella are her son Michael and his wife Ginger of Vero Beach, Florida; son Tim and his wife DeNeille of Clemmons, NC; grandson Chandler and his wife Andrea serving the United States Air Force in Washington, DC; grandson Ryan of Cornelius, NC; step-grandchildren Ryan Gragg and his wife Antia of fWinston-Salem, NC, and Alexis Gragg of Mocksville, NC; great-grandchildren Kadence and Bryton Atwood; and sister Nancy McDaniel of Clemmons, NC. Stella was a lifelong Moravian, and many of her fondest memories were of growing up with her church family at Pine Chapel Moravian Church. Stella graduated from Gray High School in 1944 and married Bub in 1946. She was a wonderful wife and loving mother, and enjoyed spending time with family and raising her boys. She was an excellent cook, an avid gardener, and inherited her mother's love for flowers. Stella was also dedicated to staying fit and went to the YMCA 3 times a week for as long as health permitted where she made many faithful friends including Ginger Bunker, whose weekly calls and visits were so appreciated and a blessing not to be forgotten. As her health declined she could always be cheered up by visits from friends and family, especially her grand-dog Piper who always seemed to bring out the best in her Nana. A graveside service will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel on Monday, January 22, 2018 at 2 :00 pm. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staffs at Mallard Ridge and Salemtowne for the care they provided over this past year. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pine Chapel Moravian Church, 324 Goldfloss Street, Winston-Salem, NC, 27127. The arrangements are by Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek. Online memorials may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
