Stephen M. Sloan, Jr., 61, of Germanton died Thursday, March 19, 2026, after a brief illness. Steve was born in Winston-Salem, NC, to Stephen M. Sloan, Sr. and Martha Hardin Sloan. He was a graduate of North Forsyth High School and Appalachian State University. After college, Steve began working as a firefighter for the City of Winston-Salem, while concurrently beginning his career as a residential contractor. After 13 years as a firefighter, Steve began working solely as a contractor and continued to do so for the next 25 years. It was as a builder that he found his passion. He took pride in being known as a fair, honest, and very knowledgeable builder. He met many clients and sub-contractors throughout the years, many of whom became good friends. Steve possessed a joie de vivre that was infectious and he always had a ready smile and, as one friend said, a twinkle in his eye. Steve was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Thornton and Dorothy Sloan, his maternal grandparents, Mont and Jean Hardin, his father-in-law, Ken Metzger, brother-in-law, Brian Haynes, and a very special aunt, Judie Jennings. In addition to his parents, Steve is survived by his wife, Bonnie Sloan, son, Caleb Sloan, sister, Donna Sloan, mother-in-law, Gail Metzger, sister-in-law, Lisa Haynes, and niece, Lindsey (Jonah) Shreve, as well as many special aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall, NC. The family will receive visitors prior to the service, beginning at 12:30 pm. Flowers will be gratefully accepted; however, the family suggests a memorial to the following be considered: Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, Donation Processing Center, PO Box 5041
Boone, IA 50950-0041or online at pancan.org.
