Sue Smith

Vonnie Sue Evans Smith, a long-time resident of Pageland, SC and Winston-Salem, NC passed away with dignity and grace at the age of 84, surrounded by her children, on Thursday evening, June 18, 2020, in Winston-Salem, NC. She's left us to feel the grace of God in Heaven.

Born in Pageland, SC in 1935 to Lawson Parnell and Mary Magdalene Evans, Sue was a graduate of Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, married in 1955 to her first husband, Roy Smith in Charlotte, NC, then moved to Winston-Salem in 1960 and proudly raised her three children, Cynthia, Steven and David. Years after her first husband's passing, Sue shared her home and later years in Pageland, SC, with her high school sweetheart, Wade Jenkins. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and always relished the company of her friends and making new acquaintances.

A hard-working and industrious soul, Sue wore many hats in addition to being a devoted wife, mother, and friend. Throughout her career, she worked as a salesclerk, hairstylist, and a marketer, worked with Integon insurance, and as a licensed real estate agent for McNames-Sparks Realty in Winston. In addition, she owned several thriving businesses, including a general store, landscaping business, and numerous rental properties. Sue is often remembered fondly though as the go-to substitute teacher at Sherwood Forest Elementary in Winston-Salem for many years in the 1960s. She radiated her maternal teaching style as only she could give her students. In her home, Sue often played host to large holiday gatherings, bridge games, outdoor cookouts and those occasional all-nighters helping her children with their homework or school project.

Sue was never daunted to take new challenges. Equally as a mother, Sue raised her kids to be persistent, diligent and independent in work and life. If to better her family and herself, She didn't waiver in asking for what she wanted in life, yet firmly believed to remain humble and modest with whatever she may receive, never complain, pray often, and in all she did, always maintain a Christian and God-loving respect of others.

Sue is survived by her two sisters, Nancy Wellborn (Mt. Laurel NJ) and Anita Mills (Pageland SC); her daughter Cynthia Stirne (Atlanta) and two sons, Steven Smith and David VonderBurg (Winston-Salem); along with her many grandchildren and extended family of whom Sue was always so proud of them all.

Sue's family thanks and acknowledges the many gracious blessings and condolences expressed by all. Sue never made much a fuss to be the center of attention, so in lieu of a funeral, the family with hold a private graveside service in her honor.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made to the American Heart Association in her name.
