Susan M. Hill, of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a daunting eight-month struggle with numerous medical difficulties. Susan was born September 30, 1945 to Mark and Anna McNiel in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She graduated from Harrisonburg High School and earned a Bachelors degree at The College of William & Mary. She was married to her husband, Roger Hill on January 20, 1968. Susan applied her scientific education in the biochemistry labs at Cornell University and in the Research Department of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. She was proud to have been a full-time homemaker for many years, and always believed that her most important roles in life were those of mother and grandmother. She excelled at both, and nothing pleased her more than having her family together for holidays at home or weekends at Smith Mountain Lake. Later in life, she was employed as a part-time reservations agent for Piedmont Airlines and retired from US Airways Dividend Miles in 2000. Susan was a talented needleworker and an avid reader. She belonged to two book clubs and the Hillcrest Garden Club. An active member of Augsburg Lutheran Church, she served her church in many ways including Council Member and Secretary, Circle member and Communion Assistant. One of Susan's greatest pleasures was traveling with Roger to domestic and international destinations, and she felt fortunate to have seen sights across the globe from New Zealand to Eastern Europe. Susan is survived by her husband of 44 years, C. Roger Hill of Winston-Salem; a son, Mark Hill and wife Amy of Durham; a daughter, Sarah Scaffidi and husband Brian of Charlotte; and four grandchildren, Thomas and Eleanor Hill and Anna and Nora Scaffidi. She is also survived by a sister, Elizabeth Ann McNiel; a niece, Katie Rinker; a nephew, Zachary Rinker; and two cousins, Cathie McNiel and Johnny McNiel. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 20 at Augsburg Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Ronald A. Rinn and Pastor Daniel Pugh officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
