Jean Swaney McDavid, affectionately known as “Mean Jean” to those who enjoyed her sense of humor, passed peacefully on May 17, 2026, at the age of 71, surrounded by her family.
Jean was born in Alamance County and entered the world with two sisters who remained connected to her throughout her life. At the age of ten, she was adopted by Joe and Viola (Murphey) Swaney, who poured unconditional love, protection, and devotion into the little girl they had prayed for. Jean often spoke of how deeply she cherished her parents, their steadfast love, and the simple joys they created together — especially time spent with her dear cousin Susan Jackson and many treasured childhood beach trips.
Though Jean carried the pain of her early years, she also carried a profound understanding of what truly makes a family. She would tell anyone who asked that blood does not make family — love does. In the end, it was the love of her daughter and biological siblings that surrounded her, while the unconditional love of her parents watched over her from Heaven. Their greatest hope is that she left this world knowing she was deeply, and genuinely loved.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Melissa (David) Hylton, and two grandsons, Tommy (6) and Brandon (4); and by her stepson, Roy (Linda) Chilton. She is also survived by her siblings by birth: Bonnie Norman; Mandy (Tim) Sapp; Ricky (Sherry) Overman; Bo (Tammy) Overman; Barbara (Joe) Davis; Charlie (Pam) Overman; Nathaniel Eastwood; and Bliss (Dean) Groby.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Joe and Viola Swaney, stepdaughter, Karen (Chilton) Scott, and her faithful dog and constant companion, Mikey.
Jean’s life was marked by resilience, loyalty, and an unwavering stubbornness. May she rest in the peace she long deserved.
At Jean's request, there will be a small memorial to honor her life at a later date. Arrangements are ongoing at this time.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to her sister, Mandy who provided loving care for Jean in her final months, Hospice of Greensboro – Authoracare Collective and special nieces, nephews and family that helped Jean leave this world with dignity and love. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Greensboro – Authoracare Collective.
