Thelma Ruth Ogburn Carpenter

Thelma Ruth Ogburn Carpenter, 94, passed away Monday, December 16, 2013 at Autumn Care in Mocksville. She was born October 25, 1919 in Forsyth County to Walter and Ethel Luper Ogburn. Mrs. Carpenter was a member of Bethesda Moravian Church. She graduated from Baptist Hospital Nursing School in 1941. She worked at St. Leo's Hospital in Greensboro until joining the Navy in 1942. Lt. Thelma Carpenter worked on the hospital ship taking the wounded from the battlefield to Guam. She was awarded the Asiatic Pacific, Philippine Liberation, and the WWII Victory ribbons. She was a nurse and retired from Baptist Hospital in 1980's. She was married to Navy Commander Ernest L. Carpenter for over 60 years until his death in 2008. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters; Erna, Gwen and Peggy, and one brother Aubrey. Surviving are daughter, Cynthia Carpenter-Davis (Robert); stepson, Ernest L. Carpenter, Jr.; grandchildren, Chelsea Davis and Kali Davis; grandchildren, Erin Carpenter and Jovi Carpenter Berryman (Paul); two great granddaughters, Maeve and Isabel; sisters, Bea Conrad of Westminster, MD, Becky Shortell of Port Richie, FL, and Wanda O. Hunter of Winston-Salem, NC; sister-in-law, Sue Goff of Russellville, AR. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Forsyth Memorial Park with Military Rites by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the cemetery 30 minutes prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3800 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215.
