Thelma Schoolfield

Thelma Henderson Schoolfield died peacefully at Arbor Acres on January, 19, 2018 after 90 wonderful years of life. She was the youngest of six children born to A.H. and Ethel Carrico Henderson, all of whom preceded her in death - Brothers J. Van, Charley, John, Edwin and Sister Helen Henderson Jerome, as well as her son, Henry Palmer Schoolfield III, who died at birth. Thelma was born April 26, 1927 in Julian, N.C. She graduated from Liberty High School and attended church at Shiloh United Methodist Church, singing with her father in the choir, a tradition she carried on throughout her life. She attended Women's College (UNC, Greensboro, NC) where she received a certification in stenography. She married Hank (Henry Palmer Jr) Schoolfield on Sept. 4, 1949. They enjoyed 58 years of marriage before Hank's death in 2008. Thelma is survived by her daughter Judy and son-in-law Bruce Holstrom of King, N.C. as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. A member of Green Street United Methodist Church for 45 years, she then joined Trinity UMC where she sang in the choir as well as with the Morning Glories until her death. She was active serving on various committees throughout her life - PTA, United Methodist Women at both churches, and Church Secretary at Green Street UMC for 8 years, when she resigned to work with Hank in their own businesses - Universal Services, Inc., Universal Printers, Universal Racing Network and Southern MotoRacing newspaper - for 42 years. She and her husband retired March, 2006. She enjoyed singing, traveling, visiting with friends and family and loved her cat Missy. She had a lifelong passion for following her Scottish genealogy and recording all she discovered about her ancestral roots. A celebration service will be held at noon, Jan. 27, 2018 at Trinity UMC with Rev. Dr. Stephen Pillsbury and Pastor John Nelson officiating. The family will receive friends at 11 am at the church prior to the service. Meals that Heal will be at 1 pm for guests. Interment will be at Shiloh UMC in Liberty, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity UMC, 3819 Country Club Rd., WS 27104; Shiloh UMC, P.O. Box 774, Liberty, NC 27298; or Hospice, 101 Hospice Ln, WS 27101.
