Mr. Thomas Frederick Douglas (Tom), 81, of Winston-Salem passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2016.
Tom was born June 6, 1935 in Galveston Co., TX to the late John Council Douglas and Nellie Starkey Douglas. He was raised in Texas and Massachusetts, studied at Bentley School of Accounting in Boston, and earned a Masters in Business Administration from Oklahoma City University. He was a 35-year employee of General Tire and Rubber Company (later GenCorp), serving as a Field Auditor, Financial Controller, and Account Manager at Gencorp Polymer Products in Howard, WI. Following his retirement in 1995, he served with Phillips Lifeline as an emergency alert system specialist.
Tom maintained and demonstrated a steadfast Christian faith throughout his life, serving the church as a Bible teacher, ordained deacon, and choir member. He also loved old time string music and played several instruments. Above all, he took great personal pride in his family and his service to his country. He was a Korean War veteran and served eight years in the U.S. Air Force. He continued to have a patriotic spirit throughout his life and was passionate about preserving Christian, musical, family, and American heritage.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Lillie Murphy Douglas of Winston-Salem, NC; daughters, Ellen Merritt and husband Mark of Columbia, SC; Laura Duncan and husband John of Broken Arrow, OK; and Sandra Douglas of Winston-Salem, NC; brother, Donald Douglas and wife Katherine of Gig Harbor, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by two sisters; Polly Duffett and Elizabeth Benkendorfer, and two brothers; John Council Douglas, Jr., and William Douglas.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 11, 2017, at Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Airy, NC.
