Another member of the Greatest Generation has passed away, Thomas Julius Grant, at the age of 90. He was born in Knoxville, TN on June 28, 1926. After serving aboard the USS Cunningham from 1944 - 1946, Tom returned to his hometown and enrolled at the University of Tennessee.
Tom moved to Winston-Salem with his wife and daughters in 1951 and enjoyed a 37 year career with McLean Trucking.
He died on January 14, 2017 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Ina Troutman Grant; his wife of 46 years, Stella Flynn Grant; infant grandson Gregory Scott Dudley; and three brothers, Virgil, Jr., Mack, and Bill Grant, who along with Tom, served in WWII.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Dudley and Sharon Mabe (Denny); grandchildren, Mark Dudley, Shelley Pitts (Steve), Meredith Principe (Craig); and great grandchildren, Gregory, Mark Jr. and Chase Dudley, Alex and Ryan Pitts, and Matthew Principe. Also surviving is his wife of 17 years, Joan Hart Grant, stepdaughters, Lorie Patochek (Sam) and Michele Cheek (Marc) and granddaughter, Mallory, known to them as ""Papa Tom"".
A joyful celebration of Tom's 90 years will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, January 16, 2017 at Union Cross Moravian Church in Kernersville. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the church.
The following day, a private burial service will be held at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.
