Thomas Francis McKenna

It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Thomas Francis McKenna (Tom), 74 of Kernersville, NC. Tom peacefully went home to be with the Lord after an unwavering battle with cancer on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, surrounded by his children and family.

Tom was born in Jersey City, NJ to the late Francis Matthew McKenna and Marie O’Neill (later Bennardello) on September 13, 1951. Tom is survived by his wife of 17 years, Annette Meyers McKenna and their son Ryan T. McKenna and by his children Neil T. McKenna (Wendi Potter), Christopher P. McKenna (Jason Smith), Alyssa K. McKenna-Rooks (Donna Rooks) who he shared with former wife Bernice Bueta McKenna.

Tom (Papa) is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Martha McKenna, Skipper McKenna, Donavan M. Rooks, Sutton M. Rooks and Kellan McKenna; siblings, Eileen Jackson, Paul Bennardello, Diane Buttacavoli (Albert), Anthony Bennardello (Caroline), Fran Schmitter (Walter); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Tom was, first and foremost, a devoted husband, loving parent, follower of Christ and a true family man. His life was rooted in the people he loved, and he gave that love freely and wholeheartedly. Known for his quick wit and unforgettable sense of humor, he had a way of making others laugh—sometimes with jokes that were a little off-color, but always delivered with warmth and the best of intentions. He had a golden heart and a generous spirit, always willing to give of himself to help others. Kind, sweet, and deeply genuine, he was a blessing to those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Tom had a natural curiosity and a passion for discovering new things, especially when it came to technology. He also found joy in working with his hands. A true handyman with a keen eye for details, Tom was our go-to for any tool or project around the house. He took pride in creating something meaningful. In his free time, he loved movies, music, and reading. Whenever possible, he enjoyed the sense of freedom and adventure found in riding his Harley and Slingshot.

Among the many milestones of his well lived life, Tom graduated with honors from New York University obtaining his Bachelor of Science in Computer Applications and Information Systems. Tom had a long career in Information Technology (IT) working for Chase Manhattan Bank, Pfizer, Phillip Morris, New York University Medical Center, Loews Corporation, and retiring in 2017 from Lorillard Tobacco Company (ITG Brands) as a Systems Development Manager.

Tom leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and kindness that will never be forgotten. He will greatly be missed.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 10:30am at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 2203 W. Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27403. A Celebration of Life will follow later in the day, details will be provided soon.
