Ms. Tyna Jnell Burgess Hunter, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2018, at Trellis Supportive Care. Tyna was born in Forsyth County to the late Rufus “Root” Gray Burgess and Tyna Lauvetta Bowers Burgess on June 28, 1945. She grew up in Winston-Salem, attended Mineral Springs High School, and earned her associate degree in Early Childhood Development from Forsyth Technical Community College. Tyna loved her grandchildren, her church, the beach, especially Carolina Beach, iced tea and hot dogs. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Rufus Gray Burgess Jr. She is survived by one son, Kevin Burgess (Joy); two daughters, Kristina Welch (Darrick) and Blair Hunter (Thomas); grandchildren, Christian (Acacia); Jade (Brad); Roosevelt, Naomi, Troy, Aurion, Kaleb, Otto and Luna; great granddaughter, Isla and great grandson Gabriel (on the way); brother, Jerry Burgess (Lorinda); sister and “partner in crime”, Sandra Kay Burgess. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 13, 2018, at Freeman Street Baptist Church, Winston-Salem with Pastor Brandon Harrison and Pastor Bill Jones officiating. Family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations are sent to the Children’s Ministry at Freeman Street Baptist Church, 2311 Freeman Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27127 to honor Tyna’s lifetime of work, loving and educating the preschool children of Winston-Salem, Clemmons, and King, NC.
