Vergie Mays

Mrs. Vergie Williams Mays, 89, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2018 surrounded by family. She was born March 22, 1928 to the late Mary Magdalene Walker Williams and Alley Kiester Williams. Mrs. Mays loved her family and enjoyed playing Bingo with her special friend, Doris Faircloth. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mays was preceded in death by her husband, John Stewart Mays; two sons, Jack Douglas Mays and Russell Stewart Mays; and six siblings. She is survived by two children: Kenneth Mays and Margaret (Bill) Overby; daughter-in-law, Linda Mays; nine grandchildren: Tammy, Angie, Kim, Sharon, Billy, John Paul, Leanne, Amanda, and Jason; twenty great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, at Crestview Memorial Park with the Rev. Eddie Honeycutt officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Meals on Wheels, 295 Shorefair Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.
