Mr. Vernon George Gambill, 85, of Winston-Salem, passed away at his home on Monday, April 13, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Vernon was born in Wilkes County, NC on October 16, 1940, to the late Millard Filmore Gambill and Anna Lou Bowers Gambill.
Vernon graduated from Appalachian Teachers College with a degree in science and mathematics. Following graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army and stationed in Germany as a military policeman.
After receiving an honorable discharge from the military, Vernon began his career in the packaging industry. He was employed with Blue Ridge Packaging in Martinsville, VA. After retirement, he began a second career with Black Tie Transportation for the remainder of his working life.
Vernon was a faithful member of Knollwood Baptist Church where he served in numerous capacities. He was active in the Knollwood Christian Theater and spent many years coaching the church softball team. Vernon was an avid golfer and a basketball coach in the Christian League in Winston-Salem and cherished the years he spent coaching women’s basketball.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Judith Ezzell Gambill; daughters, Melissa Day (Todd) and Laura Clary (Ray); grandchildren, Dylan (Catherine), Ben (Erika), Jake, Abby (Steven), and Ash; and great-grandchildren, Jackson, Joshua, Jonah, Joseph, Isaac, and Luke.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, April 20, 2026, at Knollwood Baptist Church with Dr. Courtney Allen Crump, Rev. Lucrecia "Chris" Norman, and Dr. Bob Setzer, Jr. officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church. Interment will follow the reception at Parklawn Memorial Park.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Heath Thornton, Dr. Rupali Bhave, Nicole Beverly, PAC, and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Cancer Center nurses for the exceptional care they provided to Vernon over the past four years. They would also like to thank their in-home caregivers, DeAnna and Dwayne Miller, who made life easier for the entire family during Vernon’s illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Knollwood Baptist Church, 330 Knollwood St., Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family of Mr. Gambill.
