Vernon Donald “Don” McCroskey, 83, passed away on April 6, 2019 at Arbor Acres. He was born on June 24, 1935 to Vernon McCroskey and Ethel Goodman McCroskey in Bristol, VA. Don first worked as a CPA with Mead Corporation in Ohio and Wisconsin before relocating to Stanleytown, VA, holding multiple leadership positions at Stanley Furniture. He then moved to Reading, PA where he served as CFO of WGM Safety, and President of Willson Safety which was acquired by Christian Dalloz SA. He retired in Winston-Salem, NC as CEO of Christian Dalloz, having led the company through many mergers and acquisitions. He was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church and had the heart of a servant, volunteering in such areas as church missions, Calvary’s ROMEO group, and mentoring others in business and personal finance. He also loved to work on endless home projects for his children and grandchildren. Don will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, caring nature, and welcoming and compassionate spirit. Don and Bette, his wife of 57 years, built life-long friendships in every community where they lived, worked and served the Lord with passion. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife, Bette Monk McCroskey and sister, Marie McCroskey Hutton. Surviving are his son, Jeff McCroskey (Kayley) of Chesapeake, VA; son, Craig McCroskey (Terese) of Bassett, VA; daughter, Donna Jo McCroskey (Jean Collier) of Richmond, VA; nine grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Ted Monk (Melanie); a number of nieces and nephews; and cherished and loving friend, Gale Hill. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM, Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Gary Byrum officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. A visitation for friends and family will be held from 5:00-6:30 PM Friday, April 12, 2019 at the funeral home. An additional visitation will be held Saturday prior to the service from 11:00 AM-11:45 AM at the funeral home. The family appreciates the love and care of many wonderful friends throughout Don’s illness.
