Miss Vertie Mae Spry passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2016. She was born July 31, 1926 to Dora Mae Booe Spry and Ernest Steven Spry in Winston-Salem, NC. She was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Leonard Spry, as well as her parents. She is survived by her brother's wife, Frankie Bodenheimer Spry, and two nieces, Susan Spry (Mike Cullinan) and Sharon Mabe (Wayne Mabe); two great-nephews, Jeremy Rosenquist and Samuel Mabe; one great-great nephew, Christian Mabe. Vertie was a 1943 honor graduate of Gray High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society, the Quill and Scroll and served as Treasurer of the Senior Class. She also served on the school newspaper, yearbook, and library staffs. Vertie loved school and had perfect attendance during most school years. She was employed by the City of Winston-Salem Finance Department as Secretary to the Director of Finance from June 1943 until she retired in December 1988 with 45 years of service. On two occasions she received the Employee of the Year award. She was a member of the Professional Secretaries Association for many years and was one of the first two secretaries in Winston-Salem to pass the Certified Professional Secretary examination. She was a lifelong resident of Salem and West Salem neighborhoods. From early childhood she was a member of First Methodist Church, then Green Street Methodist Church, and in 1993 became a member of Christ Moravian Church where she served on the Board of Elders and was a very active member as long as her health permitted. She was a member of West Salem Civic Club and served as a volunteer at Forsyth Medical Center for a number of years. Vertie was a loving daughter and a wonderful aunt. She was a dedicated church member, neighbor, colleague, and friend to many. The funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 1:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Dr. David A. Marcus, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00 PM until 12:45 PM at the funeral home.
