Mrs. Virgie Martin Ray, 93, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away Thursday, September 1, 2016. She was born August 31, 1923 in Wilkes County to Cordie Bell Martin and J.R. Martin. Mrs. Ray was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, William Robert ""Bill"" Ray. Surviving are a daughter, Vickie Flippin and husband Horace of Westfield; a son, Eddie Ray and wife Paulette of East Bend; one grandson, Kevin Flippin; one great granddaughter, Amber Smith (Jacob) and two great great grandchildren, Chase Matthew Smith and Chance Michael Smith, all of Westfield. Also surviving are a special niece, Virgie Jarvis of North Wilkesboro and numerous special nephews. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Brenner's Childrens' Hospital, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157. The family would like to thank Dr. Jennifer Chapman and Elaine Strickland, RN of Mt. Airy as well as Mrs. Ray's caregiver, Kelly Beck for their love and compassion they all showed to their mother.
