Mr. Virgil Artemus Tucker, Jr. 93, passed away peacefully and went on to be with his Savior on October 12, 2017. Virgil was born in Mayodan, NC on January 24, 1924 to Maude Albert and Virgil Artemus Tucker, Sr. He lived there until deploying with the United States Navy in World War II in the South Pacific Theater. After serving for almost two years, Virgil returned home and completed his bachelor's degree in 1950 from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. He was a dedicated employee at Western Electric in Winston-Salem from 1950 until his retirement in 1983. For over 60 years, Virgil was a faithful member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church where he and Gwen were active and had many friends over the years. He was always proud of his children and grandchildren and treasured time with family. Family gatherings were his favorite times where he loved telling stories and always enjoyed the food traditions of our family. We mourn that our time together here is done, but we are thankful for the blessings we were given. Virgil was extraordinary and stood out in what is known as the "greatest generation". His family rejoices that he is reunited with his wife and that we will see him again. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Gwendolyn R. Tucker; three sisters; and one brother. Surviving are two daughters; Gayle McCarty and husband Wayne of Denver, NC and Virgie Ball and husband Keith of Lexington, NC; two sons, Alan Tucker and wife Julie of Snellville, GA and James Tucker of Advance, NC; six grandchildren, Stephanie Painter and husband Karl, Steven McCarty and wife Whitney, Brooke Parrish and fiancé David Owens, Chris Hemrick and wife Lara, Trey Tucker, and Colby Tucker; nine great-grandchildren, Caroline, Abby, Sydney, Jamison, Will, Tori, Austin, Tess, and Tate.
