Virginia Hammons, 101, entered heaven November 1, 2016 in Catonsville, MD. Born in Maywood, IL on June 22, 1915 as the daughter of Pearl LeClair & Algot Soderberg, she started dancing lessons at age 4, skipped 2 grades in high school, and graduated before dancing professionally as a sister team called the ""Valgean Sisters."" They traveled the U.S. in Vaudeville. She danced on the same stage as ""greats"" such as Mickey Rooney. Virginia fell in love and married another performer, Forrest Hammons, on October 5, 1936. They lived in Winston-Salem and shared nearly 50 years of marriage until he went to be with the Lord on July 26, 1986. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church. They had 2 daughters, Susan who died at age 7 in 1950, and Sharon who married John Davis, also of Winston-Salem. Virginia is preceded in death by brother, William Soderberg, and survived by brother Jack Soderberg, daughter Sharon Davis, son-in-law John Davis, granddaughter Heather Epkins, grandson-in-law Bill Epkins, and great grand-children Madison and Mason who called her ""GG"". Virginia continued dancing until she was 98 and became an award-winning painter at 72. She will be remembered for her contagious and stubborn optimism, her sweet eyes and beautiful smile, her love of the arts, and her faithfulness to her husband and to the Lord. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 pm Saturday, November 5, 2016 at Salem Cemetery with Dr. Howard Wilburn officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:30 a.m. Saturday prior to the service at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
