On the evening of March 11, 2014, Walter ""Wally"" Gaston Tate, Jr. passed away peacefully at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Walter was 71 years old. Walter was born in Winston-Salem, NC on October 14, 1942. He was the oldest child of Millie Mary and Walter G. Tate, Sr., both deceased. He was a lifelong member of Ardmore Baptist Church. Walter attended R.J. Reynolds High School, class of 1961, before joining the Army that same year as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. After his honorable discharge, Walter continued his education studying art appreciation at High Point University and DCCC. He was also a graduate of The Famous Artists School out of Westport, CT. Walter was an accomplished artist, with many of his paintings hanging in galleries, businesses and homes throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. Two US Presidents were recipients of his work, as was Elizabeth Edwards. He worked out of his studio gallery in Old Salem for many years. Walter was also president and CEO of the International Volkswagen Association (IVWA), commonly known as the Bug Bash. In his later years Walter owned and operated Piedmont Limo Service. In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Larimore Tate; and his brother, James ""Jimmy"" H. Tate. Walter is survived by his children, Michael G. Tate of Walkertown, NC, Adam Tate, Jessica Tate, and Jonathan Tate of Clemmons, NC, and Ashley Tate of Winston-Salem, NC; his sister, Cindy Tate Benson of Winston-Salem, NC; his nephew, Kevin Benson and his wife Stacey of Greensboro, NC; his niece, Kimberly Tate of Los Angeles, CA; his daughter-in-law, Angie Tate; his granddaughters, Ella Tate, Sydney Tate and Alexis Tate; his grandson, Ben Tate; his stepdaughter, Misty Lyons and her children; and his aunt, Carrie Spinelli of San Diego, CA. Walter also leaves behind many beloved cousins and close friends. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 20, 2014 at Ardmore Baptist Church, 501 Miller St., Winston-Salem, NC. The burial will be private.
