Wanda Rose Chason Powers

Mrs. Wanda Rose Chason Powers, 82, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, at Arbor Acres. Mrs. Powers was born in St. Pauls, NC on November 1, 1933, to the late Herbert Lily Chason and Bertha Musselwhite Chason. Wanda attended Mars Hill Junior College and received a Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree and Doctorate in Elementary Education and Curriculum Instruction from UNCG. She worked as the supervisor of student teachers in the Elementary Education Department at UNCG and High Point University until her retirement. Wanda was an avid reader, especially children's books. Mrs. Powers is survived by her husband, Ollin M. Powers of the home; one son, John Powers and wife, Anne of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Robbie and Elizabeth Powers; and numerous other loving relatives. Funeral services for Mrs. Powers will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 17, 2016, at First Christian Church in Winston-Salem. Interment will follow at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Lumberton, NC. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Mrs. Powers was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and wonderful cook and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Read Winston-Salem, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 520 Summit St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Wanda's life's work was her family and the education of children and ensuring all children had a chance to learn to read. The family of Mrs. Powers requests all donations in her memory be made to the Augustine Literacy Project with Read Winston-Salem so that her passion can be continued for all children.
