WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Wilda Stack Robbs, 99 died Sunday, May 28, 2017 at Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem. She was born on November 17, 1917 to David Elmer and Daisie McBee Stack in Augusta, Georgia. Her family moved to Winston-Salem to be near relatives and she graduated from RJ Reynolds High school in 1933. In 1937 she graduated from Guilford College with a Bachelor of Arts degree that earned her a teaching certificate for French and English.
In 1938 she and her mother moved to Washington, DC where she began her working career with the Social Security Board and the Federal Security Agency. While in Washington she met Charles Stacy Robbs, a young attorney with the IRS and they were married in 1942. For the next 21 years she became a homemaker and they raised their family in Arlington, Virginia. Following her husbands' retirement in 1963 they returned to Winston-Salem.
Wilda was active in a variety of volunteer organizations including Girl Scouts, Home Demonstration Club, Konnoak Hills Garden Club, American Red Cross, Old Salem and Crisis Control Ministries. Following her husband's death in 1966, she joined the office staff at Philo Junior High School where she worked for 9 years. She was member of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church serving on many committees within the parish and in the Diocese of North Carolina. She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing Bridge and solving crossword puzzles - she rarely lost at Scrabble. She was an excellent cook, providing ""Sunday dinners at Granny's"" for her family and friends that was a tradition for many years. She traveled extensively with her best friend Dixie Linville (mother of Dee Ann Robbs) and together they provided a dynamic tag team for their children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Stacy Robbs, her sister Cleo Stack Macon and her daughter Kay Hodges. She is survived by two children, Tom Robbs and wife Vickie of Leland, NC; Larry Robbs and wife Dee Ann of Winston-Salem; son-in-law Grant Hodges of Alexandria, Virginia; eight grandchildren: Jim Hodges and wife Hayden of Fredericksburg, Virginia; John Hodges and wife Amy of Bristow, Virginia; Tammy Davis and husband Walt of Winston-Salem; Stacy Da Silva and husband Alberto of Leland, NC; Tom Robbs II and wife Stephanie of Milton, Canada; Margaret Robbs of Los Angeles, California; Austin Robbs of Oakland, California; Catherine Farrow and husband Keith of Boston, Massachusetts and eight great-grandchildren.
