Willa Jo Cheek

Willa Jo Cheek, 91, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at Brookstone Terrace in Clemmons, NC. Jo was born in Dillsboro, NC to the late Homer Sutton and Bessie Brooks Sutton. Jo was active in the East Davie Extension Homemakers for many years and served as its president. She was the children’s Sunday school superintendent at College Park Baptist Church in Winston-Salem in the 1960’s through the early 70’s. After moving to Davie County, she became a member of Green Meadows Baptist Church where she taught children’s Sunday school for many years. She enjoyed volunteering and serving her community in many ways. To name a few, she served as a judge of baked goods at the Dixie Classic Fair for many years, was elected to the Bermuda Center Sanitary District Board in 1983, and served as a Long-Term Care Ombudsman. You would often see Jo as the cashier on weekends at Staley’s Charcoal Steakhouse alongside her husband, Kenneth Cheek. Jo also loved to cook and go on mission trips with her brother, Lester. Jo would often say, “you preach your own funeral by the life you live.” Jo was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Kenneth Cheek; half-brother, Alvin Sutton whose mother died in childbirth; sister, Virginia Sutton; brothers, Kenneth Sutton and Rev. Lester Sutton. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Ken Cheek, Jr. (Susan); daughter, Jennifer Blumenthal (Larry); two granddaughters, Megan Cheek and Morgan Adams (Brandon); great-granddaughter, Alayna Crouse and a great-grandson, Weylen Jo Adams. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Pleasant Home Baptist Church Cemetery, 2253 Byrd Rd. Roaring River, NC 28669 with Rev. Nick Cheek officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pleasant Home Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 2253 Byrd Rd. Roaring River, NC 28669 or do a random act of kindness in her memory.
