Willa Nifong Sowers

Willa Zan Nifong Sowers, 76, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 5, 2025, surrounded by family and friends.

Born in Winston-Salem to Clifford Albert Nifong and Sallie Rutledge Nifong, Willa was the fifth of seven siblings. A graduate of North Davidson High School and cosmetology school, she spent 57 years as a devoted hairstylist, known for her warmth, creativity, and care.

She married her high school sweetheart, Stanley Bruce Sowers, in 1967, and they shared nearly 46 years of marriage filled with love, travel, and laughter. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, and joyful adventures—from mountain views to seaside summers.

Willa was preceded in death by her husband, Stan; her son, Chadwick Sowers; her parents; her brother, Lamarr Nifong; her sister, Sandra Zink; and her nephews, Lee and Travis Zink.

She is survived by her daughter, Ashley (Kevin) Lay; daughter-in-law, Jordan Sowers; grandchildren, Andrew (Brittany), Alexandra (Jeremy), Carson (Danielle), Jackson, and Caroline; great-grandson, Barrett; and many cherished siblings, nieces, and nephews.

A woman of deep faith and boundless energy, Willa was known for her spontaneous generosity, her role as “Mimi,” her love of flowers, her beautiful spirit, and serving others. Even in her final days, she gave of herself joyfully. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those she touched with her kindness, strength, and unshakable faith. Her legacy is a garden of memories, blooming in all of us.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 11, 2025, from 6–8 PM at Faith Church of Midway. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, May 12, 2025, at 11 AM at the church.
