Mr. William “Bill” Franklin Heffner, Jr., passed away on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Bill was born on April 27, 1959, in Gastonia, NC, to the late William Franklin “Frank” Heffner and Mae Rene Hauser Heffner. He graduated from Duke University in 1977 with a BS in Computer Science and was an avid Duke sports fan, rarely missing a home football game. His sister, Lucy, would come down from Virginia to watch the game with him. He always purchased an extra ticket so he could invite a friend. Following his graduation, Bill worked at SAS Institute Inc. in Cary, NC, for 35 years as a Systems Developer. While he appreciated many aspects of his job, he especially enjoyed the camaraderie of playing on intramural and city sports teams. Bill was active in the South Davidson community, serving as treasurer for several years for the booster club and working in the concession stand. He had a strong faith and loved singing in the church choir. He was a kind and gentle man that was beloved by friends and family. They will all miss him dearly. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Lucy Heffner Johnson.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Judy Theimer Heffner, his two sons, William Benjamin Heffner of Raleigh, NC and Joseph Lee Fleming and his wife Audrey of Lexington, NC. He is also survived by one sister, Sylvia Earnhardt, and her husband, Bob, and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, October 5th at 2 p.m. at First Reformed United Church of Christ, 104 E Center St, Lexington, NC
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bill’s name to: The Life Center of Davidson County, 601 W Center St, Lexington, NC 27292.
