William Chatman

William "Bill" Ray Chatman, 88, a faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, finished his journey here on Earth on March 16, 2018. Bill was born on November 23, 1929 to the late Joseph and Pearl Chatman. A 1949 graduate of Gray High School and a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, Bill was actively involved in the community and retired from North Carolina National Bank. For many years, Bill was in charge of and sold tickets for Wake Forest University, Glenn High School Athletics and for the Dixie Classic Fair. Bill's life was defined by his decision to accept Jesus Christ as his personal Savior in his early 20's. While working at the bank, he led Christian Businessman in Bible study and prayer. Through these efforts, the Lord called him into the ministry. From 1971 to 1978, Bill pastored Northside Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. From 1978 to 2015, Bill served as supply pastor for many congregations throughout NC and southern VA, his last pastorate being Calvary Baptist Church in Summerfield, NC. He also served 22 years at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home doing whatever was asked of him. For 61 years, he was married to his sweetheart, Peggy. Together they raised their children, Marty Chatman (Sandra) and Lisa Chambers. His proudest achievement was earning the title "Paw Paw" to his three grandchildren, Dean Chambers (Stephanie), Derek Chambers (Amanda McCann) and Davis Chatman (Marisa Warren) and his great-grandchildren, Ella Chambers and William Chambers (due in June). Bill is also survived by his brother, Pete Chatman (JoAnne). Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lucille Chatman. Bill loved life, loved his family and friends and most of all, loved his Lord and will be greatly missed. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at Grace Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Roberson, Rev. Timothy Wolf and Rev. Dean Chambers officiating. Interment will follow in Northside Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
