William Francis (Frank) Morgan, 92, long-time educator and former principal of Clemmons Elementary School, finished his pilgrimage on May 31, 2017. He was born in Winston-Salem, NC, on July 30, 1924, to Hampton H. Morgan and Myrtle Wilkinson Morgan, as one of seven siblings. In 1944 he joined the Eighth Air Force's efforts in World War II. He served as a radio operator aboard a B-24 Liberator from 1944-1945. On his twenty-ninth mission, his plane was shot down over Munster, Germany. Frank spent the last three months of the war as a POW before being liberated by the Allied forces. After completing his tour of duty, he resumed his college education at Wake Forest College to complete the undergraduate work begun at Mars Hill College before the war. He graduated from Wake Forest with a bachelor's degree in English in 1947. Frank received his Master in Education from the University of North Carolina in 1951. On August 19, 1950, Frank married the former Helen Virginia Buchanan at First Baptist Church on Fifth St. in Winston-Salem. The couple celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary last August. Frank began his career as a teacher at Walnut Cove High School in 1948-49, but joined the staff at Clemmons High School in 1951 as an English teacher and became principal of the school in 1955. He spent a total of 31 years at Clemmons School - retiring in 1984. Frank and his wife attended Clemmons First Baptist Church where Frank was a Sunday school teacher for many years. After his retirement from the public schools, Frank enjoyed coffee and camaraderie with the men of the Executive Club of Clemmons. Their breakfast meetings were a staple of his retired years. In 2011 the W. Frank Morgan Elementary School in Clemmons, NC, was eponymously named in his honor and for his years of dedication to the community. Frank is survived by his wife, Helen Buchanan Morgan; his children William Jr. (Betty), Sarah (Geoffrey Simon), and Jonathan (Susanne); his grandson Adam, brothers Hampton Morgan Sr. and James Morgan (Mary Alice) and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Celeste Gregory (Rudolph), Ann Reavis (Ralph), Glennie Walsh (Jack) and Jack Morgan (Birchel). The service to celebrate W. Frank Morgan's life will be held at Clemmons First Baptist Church at 12:00pm June 10 after a private entombment at Westlawn Cemetery.
