William Teddy Chapman of King, NC, and most recently Greensboro, NC, passed away peacefully on July 16 at the age of 87 after a long and courageous battle with dementia. Ted resided in King, NC, for nearly 70 years before moving to Greensboro in 2024 to be closer to family, who lovingly cared for him and helped keep him comfortable at home.
Ted was born in Pikeville, KY, to Wallace and Martha Chapman on May 1, 1939. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and loyal friend. Ted enjoyed a 60-year career as a truck driver and worked as an independent owner-operator of C & C Transport for more than 40 years. He was known for maintaining some of the most immaculate equipment in the business, taking great pride in caring for his drivers, and serving as an outspoken ambassador for independent truckers. Ted was recognized as the 2005 Overdrive Trucker of the Year, and his story is remembered as a model of perseverance, professionalism, and passion in the trucking industry. Outside of work, Ted loved NASCAR racing, working on his collection of muscle cars, riding his motorcycle, fishing, hunting, reading the Bible, and spending time with his family.
Ted is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bonnie; his son, Garrett, and Garrett’s wife, Annie, along with their three sons, Clay (wife Meredith), Cole, and Connor; his daughter, Rhonda Mullins, and her husband, Louie, along with their three daughters, Leigh Ann, Ashley, and Billee Jo and six great grandchildren; his brother, Rene Chapman (wife Brenda); Hong Chapman, widow of the late Harold “Donnie” Chapman; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his immediate family, Ted is also remembered by countless extended relatives in Kentucky, Ohio, North Carolina, Virgina, and South Carolina.
The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller located in Rural Hall at 305 Bethania-Rural Hall Rd from 12-1:30pm on Saturday, July 18. Visitation will be followed by a memorial from 1:45-2:45 pm.
