On July 4, 2018, William David Todd passed away on his 75th birthday, surrounded by family and loved ones, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Bill spent his life serving and taking care of those around him. Bill had a huge heart and a sharp and brilliant mind. He could fix anything that was broken from cars to electronics, and he used that talent to help others. From 1984-2016, he worked in the Old Salem community, first for Salem Academy and College and later for Home Moravian Church where he was a long-time member. As Superintendent of Building and Grounds, he worked tirelessly to make sure that every task was done to a degree of excellence. He loved the school and he loved the church, and it showed in his efforts to make them the best that they could be. Whenever there was a need, he took care of it no matter what time of day. He meticulously attended to every detail and put the needs of others above his own. This was obvious not just in his professional life, but truly in his personal life. Bill loved his family, and every decision he made was for the sake of those around him. He had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. He beamed with pride as he spoke cheerfully of their accomplishments and pursuits and enthusiastically attended most every event that they participated in. Bill especially loved travelling with his family. Trips to the beach, Gatlinburg, Disney World, and even the Pennsylvania Amish Country were sources of fun and joy. More than anything, he loved Dianne, his wife of 55 years. He took care of her faithfully and attended to her every need. They were almost always seen side by side, whether at church, walking at the Y, or having dinner on Friday night at Stratford Station Grill. On the rare occasion that he took time for himself, he enjoyed watching John Wayne movies, sports, or the latest news. Christmas was a favorite time of year, and he loved setting up beautiful displays in his home. Bill's warm and affable personality touched the lives of those around him in a pure and meaningful way. He was a bit of a character with a delightful sense of humor, and he could make a friend of any stranger. He will be sorely missed by friends and family alike. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Bertha Searcy and Miller Todd. He is survived by his wife, Dianne Shugart Todd, his daughters, Annette Todd Nichols and husband, Todd, and Patrice Todd Reaves and husband, Rick. He was blessed with four grandchildren: Christina Reaves Diamond and husband, Matt, Ashley Reaves Speirs and husband, Jordan, Anna Nichols, and William Reaves.
The celebration and commemoration of the life of William Todd will be held at Home Moravian Church in Old Salem on Saturday, July 7, at 11am. A short graveside service will follow at Crestview Memorial Park, University Parkway, Rural Hall.
