Mr. William Garvis “Whitey” Norman, 94, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2019 at his home. He was born in Yadkin Co. on April 14, 1925 the son of the late John Norman and Jenny Wooten Norman. Whitey was a pioneer in the world of NASCAR, racing on the beach course at Daytona and was a 9-time winner at Bowman Gray. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was a tank driver on D-Day. Whitey was owner and operator of Whitey’s Used Cars and was a longtime member of Bethany Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jessie Combs Norman. Whitey is survived by his wife, Carol Whitaker Norman; his children, Vickie Norman Richardson (Ray) and Mike Norman (Donna); four grandchildren, Brooke Dove, Ashley Martin (Pete), Mikela Norman and Cody Norman; and two great-grandchildren, Kacen and Kyler Martin. Whitey is also survived by two stepsons, David Whitaker (Kim) and Stacy Whitaker (Cristy). A memorial service will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 7, 2019 at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall with Dr. Brad Stamey officiating. Private burial will be at a later date. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
