William Monroe Whitman Sr.

Lewisville - Mr. William Monroe Whitman Sr., 94, died Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born December 2, 1919 in Forsyth County to Clyde Horatio Whitman Sr. and Flora Angell Whitman. Mr. Whitman entered the U.S. Army on October 15, 1941 and was discharged September 21, 1945. He was captured in North Africa on February 17, 1943 and remained a Prisoner of War in Germany for 2 years, 7 months, and 17 days. William served in three great battles…French Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria…earning three Bronze Stars. Mr. Whitman was a residential carpenter for over 35 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Clyde H. Whitman Jr., Norman W. Whitman, and Roger Whitman; 5 sisters, Della Mae Behra, Addie Taylor, Mary Livengood, Louise Huffman, and Martha June Trent. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Frances Mullican Whitman of the home; 1 daughter, Lorraine N. Whitman of Lewisville; 1 son, William M. Whitman Jr. (Doris) of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Amy Hall (Keith) of Arlington, VA and Lisa Ehlers (Darryl) of Charlotte, NC; one great-granddaughter, Olivia Willow Ehlers; 2 sisters, Frances Ann Hauser and Pearl Norman (Charlie), both of Lewisville. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel with Rev. Ottis Hurst, Rev. Ricky Hamann, and Rev. Randy Whitman officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Friday at the funeral home.
