Winnie Ashburn

Mrs. Winnifred Elizabeth Firman ""Winnie"" Ashburn, 88, passed away Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Homestead Hills in Winston-Salem. She was born in Niagara County, NY on September 25, 1927 the daughter of the late Edward R. Firman and Agnes Viola Rhodey Firman. Winnie was a member of First Baptist Church of Stanleyville and will be remembered as a strong, wise and caring woman. She graduated from LaSalle Niagara Falls High School, received a B.A. Degree from University of New York in Postdam, NY, received a Master of Arts and Master of Science Degrees from the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minnesota and the received her Doctorate Degree in Biochemistry from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Ashburn in 2012. She is survived by her step-son, Terry Ashburn and wife Sandra of Rural Hall and her step-daughter, Teresa Paschal and husband Mike of Cary, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall. Entombment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the service at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall.
