Zelda Smith Burton

It is with great sadness, but also profound joy in having known and loved her, that we announce the death of Mrs. Zelda Smith Burton, 97, on Sunday, September 13, 2026.

Mrs. Burton was born on October 22, 1928, in Davie County, NC, to the late Alex Fred Smith and Hazel Luina Bowden Smith.

Zelda was a dedicated member of Advent Moravian Church for over 60 years. She enjoyed quilting, reading, and visiting with her cherished family and friends from Advent. Above all, family was the center of her life. Known affectionately as “Mammy” to her grandsons, she was immensely proud of them and loved them dearly.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Burton was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Herbert Dale Burton; and her five siblings, Clara Tally, Avenelle Willard, Thelma Hyland, Warren Smith, and Fred Smith.

She is survived by her daughters, Verlyn Luther and husband, Harry, and Beth Morton and husband, Brack; and her two grandsons, David and Luke Morton.

A graveside service will be held in the Advent Moravian Church Graveyard at a later date. The family will receive friends following the service in the graveyard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Advent Moravian Church, 1514 W. Clemmonsville Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
