Athaleta Harren Hendrix of Winston-Salem, NC went to her heavenly home on Friday, April 23, 2021.  She was born on May 19, 1929 in Catawba County to James and Clara Radar Harren.  She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and Meemaw, a true Carolina Blue fan and a teacher into her last days of Christian principles and financial wisdom.

Mrs. Hendrix graduated cum laude from Catawba College in Salisbury, NC and completed graduate studies at UNC – Greensboro.  She taught in secondary schools at Belmont and Chapel Hill, NC and retired from Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools in 1986 (Parkland High School).

She was a faithful and active member of College Park Baptist Church since 1955, participating as a Sunday School, GA, and Bible School teacher, nursery worker, and committee participant for personnel, buildings, and fellowship suppers.

She enjoyed her family, playing bridge with friends, growing flowers (especially roses), reading the Winston-Salem Journal and watching Carolina Tarheels basketball/football, Atlanta Braves baseball and Jeopardy.

Mrs. Hendrix was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, Sylvia Ann Harren, a brother, J.Suther Harren, and her devoted husband, Omer Woodard Hendrix with whom she had 55 blessed years before his death in 2004.

Survivors include two daughters and a son, Trudy Elkins (Gary) of Winston-Salem, Amy Tilley (Jay) and Dwayne Hendrix (Maria) of Clemmons; seven grandchildren, Stacy Elkins Broughman (Roy), Brendan Elkins (Donnay), Corey Hendrix (Katelyn), Haley Hendrix Lackey (Gray), Ashlyn Tilley Baughn (Nik), Ansley Tilley and Jordon Tilley; six great-grandchildren, Levi, Lydia, Liza and Lois Broughman, Adelyn Elkins, and Decker Hendrix; and nieces, nephews and special cousins.

A private family service will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park.  The family graciously thanks you for prayers and support.

Memorials may be made to College Park Baptist Church Backpack Ministry or Benevolence Fund, Called To Bless (a new local ministry serving those in need; CalledToBless.NC@gmail.com) or a charity of your choice.
